ICHABOD: How glory departed from Super Eagles

By AMEH COMRADE GODWIN

The burning desire to be or do something usually gives one the staying power – an opportunity to get up every morning to achieve something or to rise up and start allover again after every disappointment, It is cruel, you know, that football just like music is beautiful; yet, it has the beauty of loneliness and of pain, strength and freedom alongside.

The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love, the cruel beauty of nature, and everlasting beauty of monotony lies in the heart of all well-meaning Nigerianssince last Sunday when the world cup ticket was snatched from us by the North African brother – Tunisia.

According to the biblical account of Eli’s demise, he didn’t die when they break the news of the death of his two sons, Hophni and Phenihas to him; but he fell and broke his neck when he learnt that the Ark of God has been captured from Israel.

On Sunday, many Nigerians, especially soccer fans did not break into tears when the Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 2-2 draw by their Tunisians counterparts, but many wept uncontrollably when they saw that the hope to fly the green-white-green flag in 2010 first ever world cup on African soil coming up in South Africa is shattered.

Tears of shame, pains and disappointment trickled down my lonely cheek when I saw the Cartridge Eagles flying away with the golden ticket; I was moved to tears when the so-called Super Eagles disgraced over 140 million peoples on Sunday owing to mismanagement, that day took my memory back to USA 1994, when the same Eagles deprived Nigeria the golden chance to shine in the Quarter finals of that competition, the day they lost the opportunity to Roberto Bargio of Italy in just a minute to the final whistle, due to overconfidence. And it may be difficult for Nigeria to produce such a squad again in history of football, yet we didn’t know our onions.

Each time I always wonder, are those Eagles that led Nigeria to victory in 1980 and 1994 Nations Cup really Nigerians. Where are the likes of Christian Chukwu, Segun Odegbami, Emmanuel Okala, Austin Mmadu, Austine Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and many others that served the nation whole-heartedly? Are these men that made the country proud with their God’s-given talent from this nation? – This is a big question to answer

Though Samuel Okwaraji struggled to take Nigeria to Italy 1990 world cup, alas! He died at the pitch of play in the National Stadium, Surulere.

Are those Eagles that saw the final stages of 1984, 1988 and 1990, 1994 2001, and Atlanta 1996 Olympic from the shore of this country? This is rhetoric!

This is how change happens, though. It is a relay race, and we’re very conscious of that, that our job really is to do our part of the race, and then we pass it on, and then someone picks it up, and it keeps going. And that is how it is. And we can do this, as a planet, with the consciousness that we may not get it, but we know tomorrow is always there.

The question now is that, who shall we blame as our hope to play in the finals of the world cup come 2010 is in the hands of the giant? Where shall we be when the whole will gather in South Africa, I mean where will the giant of Africa be when the world will be one in 2010?

When Phinehas’ wife who was in labour learnt about the demise of her husband’s family and the capture of the Ark of God, sorrow descended on her, she gave birth to a baby boy and christened him ICHABOD because the glory has departed from Israel.

Who then shall we blame as the glory ha departed from our national team? The Super Eagles or the technical crew, do we really need new a generation of Eagles that can make the nation proud or these one that are dominated by millionaires
