IDOMA YOUTHS COALITION AND THE OFU K’ IDOMA APPEAL TO SEN. DAVID MARK AND THE IDOMA NATION TO SUPPORT SEN. (DR.) GEORGE AKUME FOR THE POSITION OF SENATE PRESIDENT.
After a critical appraisal of the national political scene and the activities leading to the choice of the Senate President in the incoming 8thAssembly in June, 2015, and their probable impact on the Idoma nation, the youths and activists of Zone ‘C’ from different political parties and organizations have resolved and wish to state as follows:
i. That we congratulate our President-Elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, on his resounding victory at the polls and we also thank him, the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the National Working Committee of the party for considering zoning the office of Senate President to the North Central Geopolitical Zone. This has given recognition to ethnic and religious minorities in Nigeria, thus portraying the party to be committed to a people-oriented democratic process. No doubt, this is one of the first dividends of the new democratic dispensation.
ii. We beg to disagree with the agitation by the North-East for the same position of Senate President, as Nigerians view this as the handiwork of some 5thcolumnists from outside the APC who are working to break their ranks or recklessly blackmail them as belonging to a party dominated by a particular religion. We also wish to bring to the attention of the distinguished senators elected on the platform of the APC from the North-East who are also reportedly interested in the position of Senate President that, to the average Nigerian from other parts of the country, the North-West and North-East are Core-Northerners united by common cultural ties such as ethnicity, language and religion.
iii. We hereby call on our son, most Distinguished Sen. David Mark, and the entire Idoma nation to rally around Senator (Dr.) George Akume (KSJI) to enable him clinch the position of Senate President for the benefit of Benue State since the PDP will become the minority party in the 8th Senate and will hardly be in a position to produce the Senate President in the next Assembly. We urge our son, Senator David Mark, an Iroko in his party, the PDP, to take this project personal and see to the actualization of the Benue dream in the 8thAssembly.
iv. We salute the courage and charisma of Sen. (Dr.) George Akume (KSJI) as a strong pillar of democracy who has worked tirelessly and selflessly for the survival of democracy in Nigeria. He is a bridge builder whose wealth of experience and political sagacity has contributed immensely, especially to the victory of the APC in Benue State, the North Central geopolitical zone and the North at large.
Akume is a man with a good track record. He is a clean and generous figure with no case of corruption hanging over him even after eight years in office as a governor and almost eight years as a senator, during the last four of which he has occupied the position of Senate Minority Leader.
v. Finally, we endorse and pass a vote of total confidence in the person and character of Senator (Dr.) George Akume (KSJI) for the position of Senate President in the 8thAssembly.
