Benue Prisons to wear new looks

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, today directed Works and Housing Commissioners to assess the old Makurdi Prisons for renovation by the state government.
He gave the directive when the Controller of Prisons in the state, Mr. Oyigocho Ogbole, visited him at the Benue Peoples House.

Governor Ortom stated that with the expiration of the amnesty program announced by the state government there will be massive arrests and subsequent detention of possessors of illegal weapons hence the need to boost the capacity of the Makurdi Prisons.

Earlier, Mr. Ogbole had stated that the Makurdi Medium Security Prison which has a capacity of 240 inmates at the moment accommodates between 850 and 900 and requested assistance to tackle the challenge.
He commended Governor Ortom for directing the reinvigoration of the State Prerogative of Mercy Committee.

Mr. Ogbole solicited the renovation of the old Makurdi Prison, or construction of a new block, provision of vehicles, and pilgrimage slots.

The Governor also received the new Zonal Commander, Zone H of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSDC, Mr. Madu Hillary Kelechi and promised to provide him with residential accommodation.
He commended the agency for its complementary efforts in providing security for the people of the state and expressed the hope that the partnership would be sustained.

Mr. Kelechi said that he was inspired when he read Governor Ortom’s story of how he rose from grass to grace and looked forward to a fruitful working relationship with him.
Governor Ortom also pledged to support the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, to deliver on its mandate in the state.

He spoke when he received a new Benue State sector commander, Mr. Chidiebere Nkwonta.
The Governor also disclosed that his administration would soon send a bill for the Benue State Traffic Management Agency to the House of Assembly and expressed hope that staff of the command would make inputs during the public hearing.

Mr. Nkwonta disclosed that the command had mapped out strategies for aggressive public enlightenment and other ways of engaging with the Benue citizens.
