Residents of Owukpa community in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State recently got the shock of their life when a strange-but-true-story broke about a father who had carnal knowledge of his 21-year-old biological daughter to the point of putting her in the family way. The man who, identified simply as Ayo (surname witheld), however, found himself in a fix as he incurred the wrath of the god of the Idoma community, famously known as Alekwu.

Ayo, Idoma Voice learnt, had lived most of his life in the south west part of the country, and had recently returned to his country home of Ejule with his daughter. Although nobody knew how long the unholy coitus has been going on between father and daughter, but a source who spoke to our reporter said what makes the case unfathomable was that the man had remarried following his break up with his first wife.

Tongues began wagging when the result of the incestuous relationship began to manifest, but the heavily pregnant victim was reluctant to open up. However, the bubble burst when nemesis caught up with the offender, when Alekwu began to torment Mr. Ayo and he began to act strangely and shortly afterwards without any prompting he owned up to his satanic act and his daughter subsequently gave full confession of the sordid act going on behind close doors.

After singing like a bird about his dark deeds, the culprit decided to put the blame on the devil whom he accused of pushing him into the abominable act. “It was the devil,” he was quoted as saying while confessing. “I didn’t know what came over me.”

Reacting to the shocking act, a villager who wishes to remain anonymous describes the incident in her dialect as “el’uweyi ne,” (to wit, “shameful act”), saying that the man could have gone scot-free if not for Alekwu that made him to confessed.

Another villager named Agene, a local farmer thanks the gods for descending heavily on the culprit. “If not for the powers of Alekwu, that shameless man would not confess to the abomination he committed with his daughter,” he says, confirming further that “after his confession, he absconded with his daughter to Ichama, in Okpokwu LGA.”

An elder in Owukpa who spoke with Idoma Voice reflected on the changing times. “Before now, if a man put his daughter if a family way or brother impregnates his sister, the baby would not live; if the baby escapes the sword of the gods, the community would have it buried alive or thrown into the bush for ekwembi (bush baby),” he recalls.
