NIS recruitment scandal: Why we backed Abba Moro - Okpotuche Club

The National Chairman of Okpotuche Club, Mr. Ignatius Ayegba has explained why the club threw its weight behind immediate past Minister of Interior, Abba Moro over the controversy trailing the death of applicants during the Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise.

Moro has being at the receiving ends of harsh criticisms over the outcome of the poorly-handled exercise, which led to the death of many applicants in 2013.

Irked by the ugly development, many angry Nigerians took to the media, calling for the head of the Okpokwu-born native.

Speaking with Idoma Voice in his office, Ayegba, a former National Vice chairman of Idoma National Forum, affirmed that one cannot cut off the neck of his goat because it is long, stressing that no matter what happened, Morro remains an Idoma son.

“Abba (Moro) is our son. Of course, the development was very sad and unfortunate but I think the call for his head was out of it.
“When Okpotuche noticed that the attacks on him from different quarters were becoming unbearable, we had to take a stand.

“We took a full page advert in a national daily to express our support for him. Come to think of it, Moro was only the minister who had others working with him. He didn’t single-handedly organise the exercise. He had others working with him but the people decided to heap the whole blame on him because he’s from the minority group.

“The attacks and insults were not just on him alone but the entire community, and there’s need for us to protect the Idoma image.
“That was why we at Okpotuche decided to throw our weights behind him during the trying times. We got a lot of calls from many Idoma natives both at home and in the Diaspora, thanking us for the development.

“That is what Okpotuche stands for. We are here to protect the image of the Idoma community.,” he said.
Similarly, a group known as Idoma Youth Forum (IYF) has said that the constant media attacks on the former Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, is unwarranted despite his selfless service to the nation.

The forum, in a statement jointly signed by its President and Secretary General, Messrs Paul Audu and Ocheme Agada respectively, expressed optimism that the antecedents of the former minister would vindicate him.

“Moro is a detribalised Nigerian who has rendered selfless service to the nation,” the statement reads in part.
