Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday directed caretaker local government chairmen in the state to hands off affairs of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport workers, NURTW, particularly their elections.
He gave the directive to stem crises from several branches of the union across the state on account of allegations of interference leveled against the chairmen.

Governor Ortom constituted a six-member committee and gave it two weeks to ensure that the affairs of the union in the local government areas where there have been crises were conducted in accordance with its constitution and due process.

He explained that he took the measure to guarantee peace in the state.
Members of committee included Special Adviser on Labor and Employment, Patricia Kupchi, who would serve as chairman, her colleague for Religion, Ethics and Civil Society Organizations, Reverend Joseph Ogezi, NURTW National Assistant Secretary, Comrade Boga Abuul, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Justice and State Police Commissioner.

The legal officer from the Ministry of Justice would serve as the secretary.
The affected local governments concerned are Buruku, Vandeikya, Gboko, Katsina-Ala, Konshisha, Gwer West, and Kwande.
According to him trade unions were under the Federal Ministry of Labor and Productivity and in case of disputes or crises subject to the Industrial Court.

Governor Ortom stressed that his administration has pledged to abide by the rule of law and due process and would not allow officials to violate the pledge.

He said union officials must be allowed to democratically elect their officials and run their affairs in accordance with their constitution without interference from any quarters.

The Governor also met with the caretaker chairmen and management of the Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, on issues relating to internally generated revenue.
