Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, yesterday pledged support for the take-off of the Institute of Hospitality and Tourism in Benue State.
He spoke at the signing of an agreement between the state Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism and the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism for the take off of the Institute, at the Governor's Lodge in Abuja.

The Commissioner in the Ministry, Mr Sekav Dzua Iyortom signed for the state government while Mrs Chika Balogun, Director General, signed for the Institute.

Governor Ortom said with the decline in oil revenues it was imperative to look inwards and that Benue would exploit areas where it had competitive and comparative advantages including agriculture, solid minerals, culture and tourism to boost its economy.
He commended the Director General and staff of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism for what he described as their passion and commitment for the take off of the project and assured of his support in that direction.

Earlier, Mrs Balogun had said Benue State was adjudged as one of the most hospitable in the country and that if its potentials in the hospitality and tourism industry were harnessed it would certainly be a tourist destination like Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
She disclosed that her Institute had gone into partnership with the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development as well as Peace and Conflict Resolution Institute to offer courses in relevant areas for trainees.

The Director General appealed to the Governor to explore the possibility of getting senators from the state to sponsor students from their districts for the training so that people from across the state could benefit from the program.

She urged the state to develop its Tourism Master Plan and Policy as soon as possible so as to position itself for partnership with international agencies in the development of the sector in the state.
