The House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has on Thursday condemned in entirety, the continous attacks on the good people of Agatu LGA in Benue State by suspected Fulani Herdsmen.
The House also noted with dismay, how "such attacks have been re - occurring in Agatu Local Government Area for the past five years without any positive response from the government " even when a motion was raised in the 7th assembly.
Leading the debate on the motion at the plenary on Thursday, Member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Adamu Entonu expressed worries over the continuous attacks in Agatu which has led to the "displacement of over 20,000 persons who are now destitutes, following the total destruction, burning and sacking of over 25 villages".
"Aware that the primary responsibly of the government is to ensure the security and welfare of the people as provided in section 14 (2) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Therefore, these incessant attacks on the people of Agatu should receive prompt and concerned attention of the federal government", Entonu argued.
He therefore urged the federal government to rise up as a matter of urgency to curtail the the excesses of the gunmen before the entire Agatu community would be completely wiped out.
With the support of the Speaker, Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara and the entire membership of the green chamber, the motion was unanimously adopted and House Committee on IDP mandated to visit and assess the IDPs situation in Agatu and report back to the house within four weeks.
He house also urged NEMA to provide relief materials to the affected communities and survivors while urging the FG to urgently send a detachment of soldiers to the affected communities in Agatu.
The FG was also urged to include the over 25 villages destroyed by the violent attacks in its planned rehabilitation and reconstruction of victims of the terror.
It could be recalled that unknown gunmen had on Sunday and Tuesday this week launched coordinated attacks on Akwu, Aila, Okokolo and other villages of Agatu where over 200 lives were lost and properties worth millions of naira was destroyed and the people displaced.
The attack of Tuesday on Aila and Okokolo communities was the most sophisticated in recent times. According to reports, the militias came in large numbers on life boats through the Benue river from Nasarawa and attacked the villages for a whole day while helicopter was seen supplying food stuffs and amunitions to the marauders.
