The flying Hawks Football Club of Ugbugbu, last weekend floored the Agbogiri Football Club, otherwise known as Carnival FC to win the maiden edition of the Ameh Jerry Cup.
The hard-fighting Flying Hawks fought back twice to lift the trophy in a 13-goal thriller match that took place at the LGEA Primary School, Udaburu.
Andrew Ekoja (Vandan), put the Ekoja Friday (China) side in front just 13 minutes into the game but Onyemeji Ejeh leveled it with a powerful shot from outside the 18-yard box before the first 45 minutes.
Onuh Daniel Ogenyi put the Ekere Igo side ahead again with a left footer but Sunday Calinto responded with a goal to drag the tension-soaked match to extra time.
The introduction of new goal keepers for both teams made the game more interesting as the duo dazzled spectators with acrobatics styles.
At the end of the extra-time, the score line remains the same and both teams settled for penalty shootout.
Jude Ugwu was hero of the day as he saved the last kick from his opponent to deny the visitor the chance of lifting the trophy.
While Ogbanje Mikel captained the Agada Odo Samuel side, Sunday Onah Junior led the Agbogiri lads.
The award for best player of the tournament went to Sunday Calinto, while Jude Ugwu won the Golden Glove. Samuel Agada and Onyemeji Ejeh won the best coach and Most Valuable Player Awards respectively.
Addressing the players earlier, organizer of the competition Ameh Comrade Godwin explained that the match was organized in honour of the late Idoma Voice Associate Editor, Ameh Jerry.
Ameh died February 6, 2015 after a protracted battle with heart-related disease.
The Idoma Voice publisher added that the subsequent editions would involve other communities in the municipality.
