Tell Akume to stop calling me a criminal, I'm not - Suwam warns

Written By Idoma Television on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 | 1:24:00 AM

Former governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam has warned his predecessor, George Akume against tagging him a criminal.

Suswam was reacting to a recent statement by Akume where he publicly told people of the state that he regretted handing over power to Suswam in 2007, saying he ruined the state.

Akume was quoted to have said: “I regret because I had no premonition that my successor would embezzle state’s funds.”

However, Suswam has denied claims by Akume that he single handedly made him governor, stressing that it was God and the people of Benue that voted him into power.

Reacting, Suswam challenged Akume to list his achievements in office as governor so that the people of Benue state can reasonably rate their tenures.

He said: “Senator Akume is not God and therefore, he cannot claim to be the only person who solely determines what happens politically in Benue state.

“The allegation of corruption leveled against me by Senator Akume was a political statement meant to diminish my high level achievements in office.

“I am not a criminal. Senator Akume should note that I delivered on my mandate as governor of Benue state by serving Benue people who voted me into office.”
