Wonder they say shall never end, this popular cliché vividly captures the story of a middle-aged woman who reportedly exchanged her 4-year-old son for a bag of rice in Otukpo area of Benue State.
Though it sounds like a scene straight from a Nollywood epic flick, but it is true, albeit, startling.
Residents of Zone HB in Otukpo area of the state were recently stunned when a woman decided to do away with her biological son in exchange for a bag of rice.
According to NaomiDeDiva, a popular politician in the area had invited widows and less-privileged in the community for empowerment. Among the items distributed to the beneficiaries were vegetable oil, soft drinks, bags of salt, bags of rice and several other goodies.
The woman, whose identity was given as Grace Agbo was said to have arrived the venue when the benefactor had finished sharing the gifts to other women.

The source said the woman, who arrived the venue in company of her barely four-year-old son was visibly disappointed when she was told there were no more gifts on ground.
In what could be described as the highest level of desperation, the woman unstrapped her child and dumped him in front of the politician, pleading that she doesn’t mind if he could go away with the son and give her a bag of rice.
Stunned by her unusual request, the politician sought to know why she wanted to exchange her child for food; the woman said she had seven children for her husband who is jobless.
According to her, since the man was sacked from the defunct NEPA, he has not done anything.
“I no longer have money to feed them. Take him and go so I can get even a bag of rice for my other six children. All my husband does is to sit at home and do nothing, he only knows how to make babies. I am tired. Please take him and give me the rice. I know that you will take care of him.” She said amid tears.
The politician who was touched by the woman’s request gave the woman N50,000 and asked her to go home with the child. He also promised to visit the family from time to time.
