Pandemonium broke out on Tuesday at Jato Aka in Kwande local government area of Benue State when a stray bullet hit a secondary school student, Master Ayew Atume while having his lunch.

Atume was said to have died instantly as a result of the bullet.
Tribune Online gathered that the disagreement between some suspected Fulani occupants and vigilante group in the area which led to the invitation of military personnel was the remote cause of the death of the teenager.

Eyewitness said some vigilance men who were on patrol of the community acting on a tip off arrested a vehicle with suspected Fulani occupants allegedly with arms.

The eyewitness further said  ‘we heard that the suspected Fulani herdsmen made a call to soldiers in Kashimbila who rushed to the scene and tried to go with the Fulanis to their base, the vigilance group who saw this resisted the move until the vehicle is inspected”.

“It was in the process that one of the military personnel shot sporadically into the air to scare people away that bullet hit the teenage who died instantly.

“Unfortunately, the boy just returned from school and was taking lunch in his compound near the scene of the incident when the incident happened”, the eyewitness said.

Several persons were said to have sustained injury in the pandemonium that followed the shooting.

When contacted on phone, the Assistant director, Army Public Relation 707 forces brigade, Makurdi, Major Olabisi Ayeni confirmed the incident but said he was yet to get the details.
